Chinese Americans are the largest Asian American subgroup, suffer high T2D burden, and demonstrate poor diabetes control. While there is a growing body of evidence on the high prevalence of mental health issues in general populations with T2D, limited data is available for Chinese American with T2D. It remains unknown the mental health burden and service utilization among Chinese Americans with T2D. This proposed pilot study will fill these important knowledge gaps and provide preliminary data on the mental health status, service utilization, and needs and preferences for mental health services in Chinese Americans with T2D. We will also use the NIMHD Research Framework to understand multi-level barriers to accessing mental health services in Chinese Americans with T2D. These pilot data can serve as an important basis for future research to develop interventions to increase access to culturally and linguistically tailored mental health support to this underserviced group.
